THE FILM CREW OF ‘OS REVIENTO’ TURNS THE ALBÉNIZ INTO A BOXING RING ON THE SCREENING AT THE NATIONAL FANTASTIC SECTION
The young audience as the protagonist of Sunday’s activities at the 33rd Edition of Fancine with workships at the Contenedor Cultural
The Fantastic Film Festival at the University of Malaga said goodbye to the weekend with a sunny Sunday marked by activities designed for the young audience and new guests who came to the festival in order to present their projects. The mornings screenings once again attracted a considerable number of attendees to the Albeniz, which had to hang up again the ‘no tickets’ sign for the screening of ‘River’, which bids farewell to Fancine with two sold outs.
In the afternoon, in Screen 3, the encounters between the audience and the film crews that make up this 33rd Fancine program continued with the screening in the Fantástico Nacional (Fantastic National) section of ‘Os reviento’, a film written and directed by Kike Narcea. The story follows a retired boxer who, after spending some time in jail due to his excesses, settles in a small village in an attempt to lead a quiet life. However, despite avoiding trouble, his father’s death and the appearance of disreputable characters lead him to get back into fighting. The delegation formed by producer Jaime Arnaiz and actors Mario Mayo and Manuel Galea introduced the film by turning Screen 3 in Alcazabilla Street into a boxing ring, jumping on stage as if they were fighters in a competition and cheering on a devoted audience.
After this amusing presentation, they were able to have a friendly and humorous chat with the audience about the building of the main character, joking about the number of slaps they gave each other during the filming. “We didn’t want to build a ‘John Wick’. This is a Spanish action film. Pure entertainment”, summed up Arnaiz, who also thanked Narcea for their commitment to carry out this project. In addition, they mentioned that the film was influenced by Bajo Ulloa and Guy Ritchie, and also by some other legendary films like ‘Airbarg’, before admitting they already have written the second part of this playful story. The event ended up with a group photo presided over by the famous pallet in allusion to one of plot’s central elements.
As for the official competition, ‘Salem’ was screened today, a story about rival gangs and a curse that marks their destinies, along with ‘The Uncle’, a Serbo-Croatian production set in Yugoslavia in the 1980s during a family’s Christmas Eve dinner, which reveals the farce to which all of family members lend themselves.
In the meanwhile the last screening of CineAsia took place at 7 p.m. at the Rectorate. The Indosenian film ‘La mujer del infierno’ was chosen for this closing screening, the only terror film that was screened in this edition. Simultaneously, the film critic Carlos Aguilar, jury member of Fancine, presented his new book, ‘Cine de terror: 1950-1959. De entre los muertos’, at an event along with the writer Eugenio Riverio, who highlighted the specialist’s ‘kind-heartedness and exquisite documentation’ of his texts. This is the third time that the writer visits the festival of the University, of which he admitted having a very special memory: “It was here I met John Phillip Law, with whom I established a friendship which resulted in a book about him”, said Aguilar with great emotion. During his speech, he explained the content of this new editorial proposal, which now totals more than seventy titles, including fiction novels and other film manuals. One of the most emotive moments of the event happened when he explained the choice of the cover, which shows the legendary actor Vincent Price. Aguilar said he got to meet him in person and was struck by his charismatic personality, while trying to hold back tears as he recalled how he recited from memory and with passionate intensity the poem ‘The Raven’.
But Sunday also had other indisputable protagonists: the children. The children’s workshop ‘Crea Tu Casita Pokémon’ (Build Your Pokemon House) flooded the Contenedor Cultural with a large group of young artists and parents. This morning, the Misul association, dedicated to the promotion of Asian culture, organised a workshop for children, included in the 33rd program of Fancine. Whilst they were having fun playing with each other, the creators painted, glued and cut out their own houses inspired by the animated series Pokemon.
At the same time took place the comic workshop ‘Nivel Dios’ (God Level), taught in the room 1 of the scenic space of the Servicio de Cultura (Culture Service) by the professor of Drawing of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Pepo Pérez. Through his first question: “What’s a comic book?”, the expert, known for such famous works as ‘The Neighbour’, taken by the small screen by Netflix, brought his drawing technique to all the attendees. Beginning with an introduction to the history of comics, followed by a number of practical activities, the attendees became professionals in this discipline for a few hours.
