LE LIVRE DES SOLUTIONS FROM MICHEL GONDRY WILL OPEN THE 33rd EDITION OF FANCINE

The festival publishes the whole schedule for this edition on its website, tickets go on sale this Friday for a standard price of 3 euros

After a few previews of its schedule and last week’s announcement of the films that will compete in the Official Section this year, the fantasy film festival of the University of Málaga has published the complete contents of this 33rd on its website. Under the motto “Home Sweet Home”, this edition will gather an assorted selection of the best cinematographic productions of today’s genre from 8 to 16 November, as well as a wide parallel programme of activities at its different venues.

A total of 94 films will join Fancine this year including screenings in Albéniz cinema, simultaneous screenings during the week of the gala or previous events organised within its framework.

One of them will be the film chosen to open this anniversary dedicated to housing: Le Livre des solutions, the new work of French producer Michel Gondry, who comes back to leave his peculiar mark at the gala after closing it eight years ago at the 25 anniversary of Fancine with Microbe & Gasoline. This time, the awarded filmmaker of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind presents a director that seeks refuge with his team in a small town where his aunt lives to finish editing a film. Tired of mishaps, technical difficulties and the feared creative block, he decides to write a guide with practical advices that could have the answers for all of his problems. The frustration and uncertainty which with the protagonist deals with his crisis is covered in a refined touch of comedy, where Gondry subtly mixes oneiric and everyday life in his much personal style.

Nine days after that, We Are Zombies will put an end to the fantasy gala of the University until 2024. This will be Roadkill Superstars comeback, the filmmaking trio formed by the Canadians François Simard, Anouk Whissell and Yoann-Karl Whissell. After their success with Turbo Kid and Summer of 84, both screened at previous editions of the festival, these fantasy “enfants terribles” make their third full-length film as an adaptation of the comic Les zombies qui ont mangé le monde, to which they add their own crazy view and concept of the genre. Colorful characters, tons of blood and even more dark humor meet in this bizarre story, set in a city full of living dead where three lazy men after easy money are forced to fight against a big evil corporation to save their kidnapped grandmother.

In between of this long week festival, the films of the wide catalogue will be screened ordered by category, genre and taste. Leading the assorted programme is the Official Section, a wide and diverse compilation where animation, Spanish films, blockbusters and new works from worldwide known directors such as Bertrand Bonello or Alice Rohrwacher can be found. Just as interesting will be the films for the Informative Section, which will gather ten off-competition films, like the national premiere of the entertaining Apocalypse Clown, the violent Hood Witch, the original coming of age Vampire humaniste cherche suicidaire consentant or the clever River, with which Japaneese director Junta Yamaguchi experiments once again with time traveling after the praised Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes.

Horror Zone will once again review gore, blood and extreme horror compiling seven works, including Blood or Cuando acecha la maldad, the splendid winner of the last festival in Sitges. And Ánima Zone, the section dedicated to animation will bring colorful and fantastic universes to the festival with three films: White Plastic Sky, Deep Sea and Slide, the new work of American illustrator Bill Plympton, an usual of this gala.

Consolidated as a head section, Fanzriller will return once again to Alcazabilla screens. This section allows the festival to broad its cinematographic limits by exploring related genres and reach a wider audience. The characteristic suspense and action of these stories will be served by a good amount of works such as God is a Bullet, directed by Nick Cassavetes and starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Maika Monroe and Jamie Foxx; or Perdidos en la noche, with Ester Expósito as the lead role.

Furthermore, new films will be added to confirmed and published sections: Aberrance, a horror film from Mongolia, will join “Home Sweet Home”, National Fantasy includes two more films: Deviant, from Catalonian producer Daniel Muñoz Caneiro and Keratyana, Miguel Arzumendi’s debut.

The rest of the previously announced films will complete Fancine’s 33rd edition: the two categories of short films competition, “Home Asian Sweet Home”, the section in colaboration with CineAsia that will show four eastern films with a following film forum; Family Fantasy, dedicated to the little ones, where Monster House will be screened at the cultural space Contenedor Cultural Sunday afternoon; and Local Fantasy, with two full-length films and two shorts direct from Málaga.

However, despite its earlier confirmation, Acid will not be a part of this year’s festival due to its previous appereance in another event in Málaga this October, what is against the gala’s regulations.

Tickets for screenings in Albéniz cinema will be available Friday 27 October in both box office and Uniticket web for a standard price of 3 euros. It will also be possible to get a voucher for ten different showings for 20 euros in person at Alcazabillas box office. The screening timetable and the venues can be found form today at Fancine’s program in fancine.org.
